Day Two Underway At NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships; Hornets Third

The second day of competition is underway at the NCAA Division III swimming and diving championships in Minneapolis, Minn. Highlighting Thursday's preliminary races was a second-place performance by Kalamazoo's men's 200 freestyle relay team of Brian Bazzell, Paul Ellis, Alex Armstrong and Craig Fleming, in 1:22.07. The Hornets also finished third in the men's 400 medley relay, in a time of 3:20.80.

Kalamazoo rode several All-American performances Wednesday to move into third place after the first day of the national meet. The Hornets have 62 points, just 8.5 points behind second-place Emory, Ga.

Kalamazoo's 200 medley relay team of Paul Ellis, Alfonso Espinosa, Barret Mueller and Brian Bazzell finished second in 1:29.39, while Craig Fleming (third) and Bazzell (seventh) finished in the top eight in the 50 freestyle.

Olivet's Beckwith Receives NCAA "Elite 88" Honor

Olivet junior Kellen Beckwith has been named the recipient of the NCAA's Elite 88 award in Division III men's swimming and diving. The Elite 88 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 88 championships.

Beckwith, who is swimming in three events at this week's Division III swimming and diving championships in Minneapolis, Minn., carries a 4.0 GPA with a major in mathematics.

Calvin's Boerner Wins National Championship at NCAA Indoor Track Finals

Calvin junior Rachel Boerner won the NCAA Division III national championship in the women’s 400 meters Saturday at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. Boerner posted a time of :55.95. Calvin also received a second-place finish from junior Sarah Reasoner in the shot put with a toss of 46 feet, 4 inches, as the Knights finished 11th in the national meet.

Calvin, Hope Deadlocked in Commissioner's Cup Race

Calvin and Hope are tied for first place in the MIAA Commissioner's Cup race through the conclusion of the league winter sports season. Both schools have 136 points, with Hope holding a four-point lead in the men's all-sports race and Calvin holding a like advantage in the women's all-sports competition.
