Around the MIAA
The Bulldogs rang in the New Year with a dominating 51-6 victory at Lakeland University on Sunday (match statistics are not available at this time)…the points and margin of victory (45 points) set modern day program records as Adrian resurrected wrestling for the 2015-16 season after a 31-year absence…before Jan. 6, the Bulldogs had been idle since Dec. 8 when they finished in 5th place at the of 14-school North Central College Invitational in Naperville, Ill....with a 5-1 dual-record, Adrian is off to its best start since the mid 1970s…the Bulldogs have already doubled last season’s win total (2-8)…Adrian will travel to Alma on Thursday—its first conference match since 1983-84 season.
Alma returned to competition after the holiday break and finished in a tie for first place at the Waynesburg University Invitational Saturday (Jan. 5). Juniors Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich.) and Zachary Cooper (Chippewa Hills, Mich.) won their respective weight classes. Sophomore Mason Priest (Grandville, Mich.) took home second place while freshman Jayce Kuehnlein (St. Louis, Mich.) earned third. A total of nine wrestlers won multiple bouts on the day.
Olivet split four matches at the NWCA Multi-Divisional National Duals in Louisville, Kentucky. The Comets defeated Johns Hopkins (Md.), 30-13, in the first round before losing to No. 4 Ithaca (N.Y.), 29-6. Olivet rebounded to beat Heidelberg (Ohio), 26-16, in the consolation bracket. The Comets bowed out of the duals with a 27-15 loss to No. 16 University of Wis.-Whitewater. For the day, Drew Mandell had a 4-0 record, including three pins, to raise his season record to 16-1. Cole Hersch and Haydn Kinjorski each had three wins. Olivet returns to the mat on Thursday night when it hosts Trine for a MIAA dual match. The dual match is serving as a benefit to support the Out of the Darkness organization. The OC athletic department will donate $1 per fan in attendance toward the organization. All of the money raised will support implementing mental health programs on campus for all Olivet College students.
