Around the MIAA
The Adrian College volleyball team lost to Alma in the First Round of the MIAA Tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 30. The loss ended the Bulldogs’ season with a 9-16 record and a sixth place finish in the MIAA, improving their win total from last year.
Albion achieved 17 victories during the 2018 season, its most since going 17-11 in 2009…OH Kelsey Gustafson (Armada, Mich.) knocked down a season-high 15 kills and collected eight digs in the MIAA Tournament first round victory over Trine…S Grace VanDorn (North Aurora, Ill.) achieved her 16th double-double of the season with 34 assists and 18 digs vs. Trine. She dished out 23 assists in the MIAA Tournament semifinal match at Calvin to become the fourth Albion setter to reach 2,000 career assists…MB Taylor Rosenthal (Vicksburg, Mich.) finished her Albion career with 1,062 kills (third all-time at Albion) and 252 blocks (second all-time at Albion)…L Monica Shuk (Milford, Mich./Mercy) moved up to second on Albion’s all-time list with 127 aces. She finished with 2,174 digs, the Albion all-time leader…MB Marie Pregenzer (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) produced seven blocks in the tournament first round match vs. Trine.
The Scots advanced to the MIAA semifinals with a 3-1 victory over Adrian College on Tuesday (Oct. 30). Alma's season then came to an end Friday (Nov. 2) after falling to No. 14 Hope College. It was the first time since 2010 the Scots went that deep into the postseason. With a final 19-8 overall record, Alma had its most winningest season in a decade. Freshman outside hitter Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) and sophomore setter Haley Novak (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) were named First-Team All-Conference while senior middle blocker Katie Bush took home Second-Team All-Conference honors.
The Knights defeated Albion 3-0 in MIAA Tournament Semifinal Nov. 2, where Anna Kamp led the Knights in two categories with 18 kills and 18 digs. Sarah DeVries posted 22 assists, 12 kills, seven digs and two block assists. Calvin then defeated Hope 3-1 in MIAA Championship Nov. 3. Kamp had 19 kills and eight digs. DeVries posted 26 assists, 13 kills and 11 digs to earn her fifth triple double of the season. Calvin will host Greenville (Ill.) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Hope College volleyball team finished runner-up in the MIAA Tournament after losing to Calvin College in the championship match in four sets on Saturday, November 3. The Flying Dutch defeated Alma College in three sets in the semifinals on Friday, November 2. Outside hitter Ryann Stutz (Kalamazoo, Mich./Parchment) recorded a career-high 14 kills against Alma. The Flying Dutch (25-7) received an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament this week.
