Record 134 MIAA Programs Earn 2024-25 Team GPA Award

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – On Monday, August 4, the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) announced that 134 athletic teams earned the MIAA Team GPA Award for the 2024-25 academic year.

The MIAA Team GPA Award is presented to conference athletic teams that achieve a 3.300 or higher grade-point average for the academic year. GPAs are calculated at the conclusion of the academic year.

All eight of Saint Mary’s College’s MIAA-sponsored sports surpassed the GPA standard to receive the award. In addition, every MIAA-sponsored women’s program from Albion College, Alma College, Calvin University, Kalamazoo College, and Trine University was honored.

This marks the seventh-consecutive year that at least three MIAA-sponsored sports saw 100 percent of their teams achieve the Team GPA standard. These sports include softball, volleyball, women’s basketball, women’s golf, women’s soccer, women’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis, and both women’s indoor and outdoor track and field.

All nine MIAA member institutions—Adrian College, Albion, Alma, Calvin, Hope College, Kalamazoo, The University of Olivet, Saint Mary’s, and Trine—had at least 50 percent of their MIAA-sponsored athletic teams recognized with the Team GPA Award.

Each of the eight-possible athletic departments had double-digit team honorees. Hope led the way with 20 teams recognized, followed by Trine with 19, and Albion with 17. Calvin and Kalamazoo each had 16 teams honored, while Alma had 14. Olivet was represented by 13 teams, followed by Adrian with 11.

Of the 134 programs honored, 43 achieved a team GPA of 3.600 or higher, with seven programs surpassing the 3.800 mark. Those top-performing teams were Trine women’s tennis with a 3.905 GPA, Trine men’s tennis (3.889), Trine women’s golf (3.855), Calvin women’s cross country (3.833), Trine volleyball (3.813), Albion volleyball (3.812), and Saint Mary’s women’s cross country (3.807).

Fourteen of the 16 teams (including one tie-for-first) that captured an MIAA regular-season championship in 2024-25 also earned the Team GPA Award. Additionally, 17-of-19 MIAA tournament champions were among this year’s honorees. All 23 MIAA-sponsored sports had at least one team earn the academic accolade.

The MIAA has presented the Team GPA Award annually since the 1998-99 academic year. Notably, the women’s cross country programs at Calvin and Hope have each received the honor for 27-consecutive years—the longest active streaks in the conference.
