MIAA Honors Calvin's Jeff Febus with Hartman Award, Kalamazoo's Zach Metz with Renner Award

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) is proud to announce Calvin University's Jeff Febus and Kalamazoo College’s Zach Metz as the recipients of the 2025 Robin Hartman Writing Award and the Tom Renner Associate SID Award, respectively.

The accolades honor two long-time public and media relations directors and their service to the MIAA: the late Robin Hartman of Albion College and Tom Renner of Hope College.

2024-25 Robin Hartman Writing Award
Jeff Febus, Sports Information Coordinator at Calvin, has been selected as the recipient of the 2025 Robin Hartman Writing Award for his feature titled "Calvin’s Casey TerHaar: A Life Filled With Vision." The story chronicles the incredible journey of former Calvin soccer standout and longtime coach Casey TerHaar, whose life has spanned war, immigration, teaching, and decades of coaching. Born in Indonesia during World War II, TerHaar survived a Japanese prison camp as a child and reunited with his father only after the war ended. His family’s postwar path eventually brought them to the United States, where he found a new identity—both as “Casey” and as an athlete. From Calvin’s first men’s soccer All-American to a beloved coach and mentor, TerHaar left a lasting legacy on the field and in the lives of those he guided, including players overcoming their own physical and emotional adversity. Through vivid storytelling and historical depth, Febus captured TerHaar’s enduring resilience and humanity.

This marks the third time Febus has received the Hartman Award since its inception in 2007-08. A 1992 Calvin graduate and native of Grand Rapids, Febus recently completed his 30th year as Sports Information Coordinator. He returned to Calvin in 1994 after earning a master’s degree in journalism and mass communication from Drake University.

2024-25 Tom Renner Associate SID Award
Kalamazoo College senior Zach Metz has been selected as the 2025 recipient of the Tom Renner Associate SID Award. Metz, a business major and four-year football player at Kalamazoo, has played an integral role in the Hornets’ sports information and athletic communication efforts throughout his undergraduate career. As lead broadcaster for the past three years, Metz delivered high-quality livestream coverage across nearly every sport offered by Kalamazoo, earning praise from parents and fans alike for his preparation, knowledge, and on-air professionalism. Known for his dedication, he often moved straight from football practice to broadcasting duties with little time to spare.

Beyond broadcasting, Metz contributed behind the scenes with gameday graphics, historical record updates, and student-athlete bios on the department’s website. He also helped grow the program by mentoring new student assistants. Metz will begin his football coaching career as a graduate assistant at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

The MIAA congratulates both Febus and Metz for their outstanding contributions to the league’s storytelling and sports media efforts.
