Fast Start for the MIAA as Four Capture D3Baseball.com Team of the Week Honors

Four student-athletes from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) were named to the first D3baseball.com Team of the Week of the 2026 season, as announced on Tuesday. The weekly honor roll, now in its 15th season, recognizes the nation’s top performers at nine positions based on nominations submitted by sports information directors.

Representing the MIAA on the national stage were Caleb Moore and Robert Newland of Kalamazoo College along with Alexander Kavalick and Cole Grunwald of Alma College, highlighting a strong opening week for the conference.

Kalamazoo junior catcher Caleb Moore powered the Hornets’ offense during a four-game trip to California, batting .588 (10-for-17). Moore delivered his biggest performance against nationally-ranked Pomona-Pitzer, collecting three doubles and three RBIs in a 12-0 victory. Over the weekend, he scored eight runs and drove in 13, anchoring a lineup that surged to an undefeated start.

Teammate Robert Newland, a senior outfielder, also earned national recognition after hitting .571 (8-for-14) with an .857 slugging percentage across four games. Newland’s speed proved equally impactful as he swiped seven bases while scoring seven runs and adding four RBIs. His three extra-base hits — two doubles and a triple — helped lift Kalamazoo to a 4-0 record. Newland was additionally named the MIAA Baseball Position Player of the Week for his efforts.

Alma College placed two standouts on the Team of the Week, beginning with junior first baseman Alexander Kavalick. Kavalick led the Scots to a pair of wins while opening his season with a .667 batting average (6-for-9) and a 1.222 slugging percentage. He recorded three doubles and a triple, driving in four runs and scoring five in a dominant opening weekend at the plate.

On the mound, senior pitcher Cole Grunwald delivered one of the most impressive outings of the week nationwide. In Alma’s season opener, Grunwald allowed just one hit and did not issue a walk while striking out a career-high 10 batters to earn the victory. His performance also garnered MIAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors.

The four selections mark a strong start for the MIAA in the first national awards of the 2026 season, showcasing early offensive firepower and dominant pitching as conference teams begin nonconference play.
