Scholars of the Sport: MIAA Wrestling Shines in NWCA Awards

MANHEIM, Pa. -- The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) continued to demonstrate its commitment to excellence beyond competition, as wrestlers and programs across the league were recognized by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) for their academic achievements during the 2025-26 season.

A total of 473 student-athletes from 105 institutions nationwide earned NCAA Division III Men’s Scholar All-American honors, highlighting the balance required to succeed both on the mat and in the classroom. The MIAA was well represented, with every conference institution sponsoring men’s wrestling placing at least one student-athlete on the prestigious list.

Leading the way for Adrian College was senior Aiden Smith, an Exercise Science major who capped off his career with national academic recognition. Albion College produced the conference’s largest contingent, with six honorees: seniors Peyton Brooks (Data Science), Bode Brown (Biology/Biochemistry), and Cade Odrobina (Business), along with junior Owen Turnbow (Biology) and freshmen Jayden Lewis (Combined Engineering – Physics) and Wyatt Sieniarecki (Engineering).

Alma College saw two student-athletes honored, including freshman Dominic Gumtow (General Studies) and junior Luke Martin (Biology), while The University of Olivet junior Mason Knight (Accounting) and Trine University senior Tommy Miller (Mechanical Engineering) rounded out the MIAA’s individual selections.

In addition to individual accolades, Albion’s program earned national recognition in the team rankings. The Britons were named a 2026 NCAA Division III Men’s Team Scholar All-America honoree, finishing 22nd in the nation with an impressive 3.617 team GPA.

The NWCA Scholar All-America awards underscore the dedication required of student-athletes to manage rigorous academic workloads alongside the demands of collegiate wrestling. Across the MIAA, that balance continues to be a defining characteristic—proving that success in the classroom and on the mat go hand in hand.
