Defensive Dominance: MIAA Duo Lands on USILA Team of the Week

Two of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association's (MIAA) top defensive standouts earned national recognition this week as Hope College senior John Foster and Calvin University junior Drew Garrison were both named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's (USILA) Team of the Week.

The duo anchored dominant defensive performances for their respective programs, helping guide their teams to key victories and strong starts in conference play.

Foster played a pivotal role in Hope’s undefeated run, as the Flying Dutchmen improved to 11-0 on the season with a pair of decisive wins. In a 14-7 road victory at Transylvania, the senior defender controlled the defensive end with a team-best four ground balls while forcing a game-high five turnovers. He followed that performance with another strong outing in a 14-1 win over Kalamazoo in the MIAA opener, collecting a game-high seven ground balls and adding two caused turnovers.

Garrison was equally impactful for Calvin, leading the Knights to a 2-0 start in league play. In a tightly contested 8-7 win at Trine University, the junior defender delivered a game-changing performance with five ground balls and four caused turnovers, both game highs. He continued his strong play in a 23-2 victory over Alma College, tallying one ground ball and two caused turnovers in just one quarter of action.

Both Foster and Garrison have been instrumental in setting the tone defensively for their teams, combining physicality, awareness, and playmaking ability to disrupt opposing offenses. Their efforts not only powered team success this past week but also earned well-deserved recognition on the national stage as members of the USILA Team of the Week.
