BRIGHTON, Mich. -- Kalamazoo College baseball standout Robert Newland has been named the 2025-26 recipient of the Albert L. Deal Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in a Men's Sport by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA).
The prestigious award honors a senior student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics while demonstrating exceptional leadership. It is named in recognition of former MIAA Commissioner Albert L. Deal, who served the conference from 1971 to 1991. Newland becomes the fourth student-athlete in Kalamazoo history to receive the Deal Award.
"I am extremely grateful to be selected as the 2025-26 Albert L. Deal Scholar-Athlete of the Year," commented Newland. "First, I would like to thank my family and friends for their continued support throughout my academic and athletic journey; I would not be here without them. Next, I would like to thank Coach Ott and Katie Miller for the honor of nominating me for this award. Thanks to Coach Ott, I developed as an athlete, leader, and person, and I have learned so much throughout my four years on the baseball team at Kalamazoo. Off the field at Kalamazoo, I was provided with the opportunity to grow as a student, where I was able to double-major in business and English, minor in anthropology and sociology, and finish with a 3.94 GPA. Last but not least, I would like to thank the MIAA for not only selecting me as the recipient of this award, but also for providing me with four years of memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.”
A native of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Newland graduated from Kalamazoo in June 2026. He was named to the Dean's List every trimester of his collegiate career and earned College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honors in 2024, 2025, and 2026. Newland was also a four-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll selection, received the C. Wallace Lawrence Prize in Business in 2024, and was inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society in 2023 and Phi Beta Kappa in 2026.?
In June 2026, Newland was honored with the Hornet Athletic Association Award, presented to the top male senior student-athlete for outstanding athletic achievement and academic excellence; the Provost Prize in Economics and Business, recognizing excellence in academic work within the major; and the Bruce Mills Award, presented to a senior English major for outstanding writing focused on race and ethnicity in honor of the legacy of Dr. Bruce Mills.
On the diamond, Newland established himself as one of the most accomplished players in Kalamazoo baseball history. A four-year letterwinner and outfielder, he earned First Team All-MIAA honors in 2026 and received Second Team All-Region recognition from both the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and D3baseball.com. During his senior campaign, he was a two-time MIAA Player of the Week, earned D3baseball.com Team of the Week honors twice, and was named Kalamazoo's Most Valuable Player.
Newland concluded his career as Kalamazoo's single-season record holder for runs scored (61) and stolen bases (46), while also setting the program's career record for hit by pitch. During his senior season, he also recorded a 27-game hitting streak. Newland helped lead the Hornets to first-place finishes in MIAA play in both 2023 and 2024, including the program's first outright conference championship since 1927 during the 2023 season.

He has left a resounding legacy of excellence not only as a member of the baseball program, but a member of the Kalamazoo College Athletic Department and greater college community."
Beyond his athletic and academic accomplishments, Newland was deeply engaged in leadership and service throughout his collegiate career. He served as Kalamazoo's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative from 2024-26, was a Team Leader for the Inkubator for Experiential Innovation Senior Capstone in 2026, and participated in Athletes in Action, demonstrating his commitment to leadership, personal growth, and serving others.
Newland also dedicated countless hours to community engagement, volunteering with the Southwest Michigan Miracle League, Kalamazoo Growlers community events, Beaumont Children's Hospital, Western Michigan University football and hockey events, Read and Write Kalamazoo at El Sol Elementary, Building Blocks of Kalamazoo, and Kalamazoo concessions.

His commitment to excellence in the classroom, on the baseball field, and throughout the Kalamazoo community reflects the highest ideals of Division III athletics and the MIAA.
