Athlete of the Week - February 17, 2025

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) announced the Athlete of the Week awards for the week of February 10-16.

The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by head coaches and released each Monday at 4:00 p.m.

MIAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week - Jaxon Clark, Adrian College
Junior pitcher Jaxon Clark earned a 7-1 win on the mound in the season opener at Berry. In six innings pitched, Clark did not allow any runs and he totaled seven strikeouts. Clark faced 26 batters and only allowed five hits.

MIAA Baseball Position Player of the Week - David Kedrow, Adrian College
Senior utility player David Kedrow helped Adrian to a 2-1 record to start the season, including a 7-1 win at Berry and a 20-5 victory over Pfeiffer. In 13 appearances at the plate over the week, Kedrow slashed a .462/.462/.500. Kedrow totaled four runs, six hits, five runs batted in, one walk, and a stolen base in the three games. He also contributed 16 put outs.

MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week - Drew Moore, Trine University
Senior guard Drew Moore led the Thunder to a 72-69 win at Albion, followed by an 89-55 victory over Olivet. In a total of 66 minutes played over the week, Moore totaled 45 points, five steals, two assists, two defensive rebounds, 8-of-18 (.444) triples, and 13-of-15 (.867) free throws. Moore currently leads the league with 21.4 points per game, a .477 three-point field-goal percentage, 3.4 triples per contest, and 2.7 steals per game.

MIAA Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week - Julia Schutz, Saint Mary's College
Senior forward Julia Schutz helped the Belles to a 65-57 win against Olivet, followed by their first win against Alma (66-62) since 2019-20. In only 19 minutes played versus the Comets, Schutz had 19 points, seven, rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Schutz had a double-double on the road against the Scots with 33 points and 12 rebounds, while also contributing six assists and a block in 32 minutes played.

MIAA Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week - Will Davis, Albion College
Senior Will Davis competed at the Tiffin University Robison Family Invite over the weekend. His victories in both the 60m dash and the 200m dash both set school records. Davis's time of 6.77 in the 60m dash is currently fifth in the nation, while his 200m dash time of 22.14 is tied-for-34th.

MIAA Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week - Sara Schermerhorn, Hope College
Junior Sara Schermerhorn competed at Grand Valley State's Big Meet over the weekend. In the 400m dash, Schermerhorn's time of 54.58 was not only the fastest in Division III this season but also the fastest ever run on a 300m track and the fourth-ever fastest overall. Schermerhorn also ran a 25.21 in the 200m dash and remains 16th in the nation.

MIAA Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week - Ethan Spahr, Trine University
Ethan Spahr participated in Grand Valley State's Big Meet over the weekend. Spahr finished with a mark of 13.59m in the triple jump which is a new school record and currently leads the conference.

MIAA Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week - Julienne Strydom, Calvin University
Junior Julienne Strydom competed at Grand Valley State's Big Meet over the weekend. Strydom put up a mark of 5.32m in the long jump which moved her to No. 1 in the conference and third on Calvin's all-time indoor Top 10 list. 

MIAA Men's Lacrosse Offensive Athlete of the Week - Jordan Warners, Calvin University
Sophomore midfielder Jordan Warners led the Knights to an 18-2 win against Edgewood in the season opener on Saturday. Warners had a six-point performance in the midfield, scoring four goals on five shots and adding two assists. Along with being involved in a third of Calvin's goals, he was a great initiator of the offense in creating opportunities throughout the game.

MIAA Women's Lacrosse Offensive Athlete of the Week - Sophie Hartl, Kalamazoo College
Junior midfielder Sophie Hartl led the Hornets in their season opener at Indiana Tech. Hartl totaled two goals, three caused turnovers, three ground balls, and six draw controls.

MIAA Men's Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week - Sam Spangler, Adrian College
Senior goalkeeper Sam Spangler had a standout game iagainst sixth-ranked Christopher Newport to the open the season. Spangler made 28 saves on 50 shots on goal for a save percentage of .560. His 28 saves were one shy of a single-game program record and was just enough to make him the all-time saves leader in Adrian lacrosse history.

MIAA Women's Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week - Grace Barber, Kalamazoo College
Freshman defender Grace Barber opened her collegiate career at Indiana Tech on Saturday. Barber totaled four ground balls, caused a turnover, and played an influential role in Kalamazoo's clear.

MIAA Men's Lacrosse Specialist Athlete of the Week - Dylan Smith, Alma College
Senior midfielder Dylan Smith assisted the Scots to an 8-2 victory in the season opener at Earlham. Smith controlled the game at the dot, going 8-of-12 (.667) on faceoffs for the day while also adding a goal. Even on faceoffs that he lost, Smith put the opposing team in a position for good turnover opportunities, which led to more offensive opportunities for Alma.

MIAA Women's Lacrosse Specialist Athlete of the Week - Julia Kozal, Kalamazoo College
Sophomore midfielder Julia Kozal competed in Kalamazoo's season-opening game at Indiana Tech on Saturday. She totaled four draw controls, three ground balls, and a caused turnover, while also contributing three goals and one assist for four points with a .750 (3-of-4) shooting percentage.

MIAA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week - Austin Becksvoort, Hope College
Senior Austin Becksvoort went 3-1 over the weekend for the Flying Dutchmen. Becksvoort secured the lone Hope point against top-ranked Case Western Reserve with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles against Luke Saylor. At Oberlin, Becksvoort partnered with Ned Curley for a 6-4 edge over the host. Becksvoort then earned a three-set victory (0-6, 6-2, 6-0) against Oliver Faranda at No. 5 singles.

MIAA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week - Catherine Grissom, Calvin University
Senior Catherine Grissom went undefeated against Cornerstone to assist the Knights to a 6-1 victory in the spring season opener. At No. 1 doubles, and her partner Marina Ribeiro upset Camila Ibarra and Renata Castillo, 6-4. Then, at No. 2 singles, Grissom defeated Ibarra in a three-set battle (6-2, 2-6, 7-6) with a 15-13 win in the third-set tiebreaker.

MIAA Wrestling Athlete of the Week - Benyamin Kamali, The University of Olivet
Senior Benyamin Kamali helped the Comets secure the 2025 MIAA Wrestling Championship with the team's win at Adrian on Thursday. Kamali squared off and defeated Adrian Rosas with a 10-2 major decision. This was the only battle of the year between two league wrestlers who were both nationally ranked by the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll with Kamali being No. 10 and Rosas at No. 15. Kamali's win and bonus points were the initial momentum that propelled Olivet to a 24-15 victory and the outright MIAA title.
