FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) announced the Athlete of the Week awards for the week of April 7-13.
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by head coaches and released each Monday at 4:00 p.m. (unless a federal holiday).
MIAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week - Bryan Carney, The University of Olivet
Junior pitcher Bryan Carney won game one of Olivet's series against Hope with a final score of 2-1. In pitching nine innings, Carney only allowed three hits and one earned run for an ERA of 1.00, while totaling 13 strikeouts.
MIAA Baseball Position Player of the Week - Ryan Brown, Calvin University
Senior infielder Ryan Brown assisted Calvin to a 4-0 week with a 7-6 edge at Alma, followed by a series sweep against Trine. Brown slashed a .500/.750/.600 over the last four games. In 16 trips to the plate, Brown totaled four runs, eight hits, four doubles, four runs batted in, two stolen bases, and three walks. He is currently ranked second in the conference with 12 stolen bases.
MIAA Men's Golf Athlete of the Week - Cameron Bozyk, Adrian College
Sophomore Cameron Bozyk competed at Hope's Bob Ebels Invitational over the weekend. Bozyk shot 73-77 to finish 16th in a field of 71 participants.
MIAA Women's Golf Athlete of the Week - Rylee Smith, Trine University
Freshman Rylee Smith competed at the Kathy Niepagen Spring Fling hosted by Illinois Wesleyan over the weekend. Smith placed fourth individually out of 125 golfers. She shot +9 (74-79) over the two days and led the team to a 12th-place finish.
MIAA Men's Lacrosse Offensive Athlete of the Week - Braden Carpenter, Calvin University
Junior midfielder Braden Carpenter led the Knights to a 16-11 win at Kalamazoo, followed by a 13-12 edge over Trine. Carpenter amassed six goals and four assists in the two contests, while also causing two turnovers . One of his caused turnovers against the Thunder came with 20 seconds left in a 12-12 tied game. Carpenter intercepted a clearing pass which eventually led to the game-winning goal with two seconds remaining. He is currently in the league's top six with 33 goals and 48 points.
MIAA Women's Lacrosse Offensive Athlete of the Week - Brooke Hoag, Trine University
Senior midfielder Brooke Hoag led the Thunder to an 18-4 victory over Alma, followed by an 18-7 win at Saint Mary's. Hoag had a career day against the Scots, scoring six goals and dishing out four assists for 10 points. She also helped control the midfield and between the 30s, picking up two ground balls, two draw controls and causing one turnover. The win was the first home win against Alma since 2019. In Saturday's game at Saint Mary's, Hoag totaled seven more points with five goals and two assists. Hoag is currently in the MIAA's top five with 37 goals and 48 points.
MIAA Men's Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week - Logan Bride, Albion College
Junior defender Logan Bride assisted the Brits to an 11-4 win at Trine and a 28-2 victory over Alma. Bride totaled 11 ground balls and seven caused turnovers while also dishing out an assist. Bride is currently in the league's top ten with 34 caused turnovers and 63 ground balls.
MIAA Women's Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week - Natalie Scott, Calvin University
Junior defender Natalie Scott helped Calvin to a 16-5 win at Albion, followed by a 14-10 victory at Adrian. Scott recorded six ground balls, four caused turnovers, and one draw control over the week. She is currently ranked seventh in the conference with 19 caused turnvoers.
MIAA Men's Lacrosse Specialist Athlete of the Week - Nate Hanson, Calvin University
Junior Nate Hanson had a great week at the faceoff X in the 16-11 win at Kalamazoo and the 13-12 victory over Trine. Hanson went 23-of-29 against the Hornets and 14-of-25 against the Thunder for a 68.5% win percentage on the week. His efforts at the X gave the Knights extra possessions, adding 23 ground balls which ultimately proved to be a big factor in the two close wins. Hanson also added a goal in the edge over Trine.
MIAA Women's Lacrosse Specialist Athlete of the Week - Meghan Chang, Calvin University
Senior midfielder Meghan Chang assisted Calvin to a 16-5 win at Albion and a 14-10 victory at Adrian. Chang tallied 19 draw controls, five points with four goals and an assist, 18 ground balls, and four caused turnovers. She currently leads the league with 46 ground balls, 89 draw controls, and 27 caused turnovers. Chang is also in the conference's top ten with 19 assists, and 47 points.
MIAA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week - Cameron Crosby, Kalamazoo College
Freshman Cameron Crosby was undefeated for the week in helping the Hornets to a 6-1 win at Hope and a 7-0 sweep against Calvin. Crosby teamed up with Alex Fleming at No. 1 doubles to defeat Flying Dutchmen Austin Becksvoort and Ned Curley, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Crosby notched a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Paul Schneider. In the No. 1 doubles match against the Knights, Crosby and Fleming earned a 7-6(7) tiebreak win versus Rodrigo Alipo and Mario Neto to clinch the doubles point. Crosby won his No. 3 singles match 6-4, 6-1 against Felipe Sartori.
MIAA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week - Ivy Walker, Kalamazoo College
Senior Ivy Walker competed against both Hope and Calvin over the week. Although Walker lost both matches against the Flying Dutch, she put up a fight with a 6-3 loss at No. 1 doubles and a three-set loss at No. 4 singles. Walker partnered with Juliana Pullen at No. 1 doubles for a 6-3 victory over Calvin's Catherine Grissom and Marina Ribeiro. Walker was then the deciding match for the Hornets with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Ribeiro at No. 4 singles.
MIAA Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week - Max Van Huis, Trine University
Sophomore Max Van Huis assisted the Thunder to a first-place finish at the Indiana DIII Championships on Saturday. Van Huis ran a new personal best and school record in the 5K with a time of 14:15.31. His performance is currently ranked 17th in the nation.
MIAA Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week - Sophie Bull, Calvin University
Junior Sophie Bull participated at the UW-Platteville invitational against some of the top Division III schools from the midwest. In the 5000m run, Bull dropped another seven seconds off her personal record to finish third overall in a field of over 140 runners. Her time of 16:46.86 is currently fifth in the nation and fourth all-time in school history.
MIAA Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week - Simon Vandenbroek, Calvin University
Freshman Simon Vandenbroek participated at the Calvin Knight Invite over the weekend. In the high jump, Vandenbroek broke two personal records. He cleared 1.96m on his first attempt, breaking his previous best of 1.95m by 1cm. Vandenbroek then went on to clear 1.99m on his second attempt. He finished second overall at the meet, only losing to a multi-time NCAA Division II national qualifier from Hillsdale.
MIAA Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week - Lindsey Kossick, Calvin University
Senior Lindsey Kossick hit two huge personal records at the Calvin Knight Invite over the weekend. Starting the day off strong, Lindsey hit a 1m personal record in the hammer which furthered her lead in the MIAA and moves her to No. 3 in school history. En route to winning the discus throw, Kossick added about five feet to her personal best, which jumped her up to first in the conference, fifth in Calvin program history, and 27th nationally.
MIAA Softball Pitcher Athlete of the Week - Alexis Michon, Trine University
Senior pitcher Alexis Michon went 2-0 over the week with complete games against Calvin (2-1) and Adrian (9-1). In the two contests at the mound, Michon only allowed five hits and two runs without any walks for an ERA of 1.17. She also totaled 19 strikeouts while her opponents hit .122. Michon is currently top three in the conference with an ERA of 1.14, 12 wins, 13 games started, 11 complete games, five shutouts, 74 innings pitched, 38 hits allowed, 12 earned runs, and 96 strikeouts.
MIAA Softball Position Player of the Week - Sophie Stironek, Hope College
Sophomore catcher Sophie Stironek helped the Flying Dutch to a 4-1 record over the week, including a series sweep against Olivet, a 7-2 win versus Anderson, and a 9-1 victory over Albion. In 15 plate appearances, Stironek slashed a .600/1.067/.600 and totaled seven runs, nine hits, eight runs batted in, two doubles, a triple, a home run, and a stolen base. She also had a perfect fielding percentage with 30 putouts and an assist. Stironek currently leads the MIAA with a batting average of .547, six triples, a slugging percentage of .962, and an on-base percentage of .579.
