FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) has announced its Athletes of the Week for the period covering February 16-22. Each week throughout the academic year, the conference recognizes standout performances from student-athletes across its member institutions.
The MIAA Athlete of the Week honors are selected from nominations submitted by head coaches at each school. These awards spotlight the top individual efforts in competition and showcase the high level of play within the conference.
Selections are released every Monday at 4:00 p.m., with the exception of weeks impacted by federal holidays.
MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week - Porter Kretschman, The University of Olivet
Sophomore forward Porter Kretschman helped the Comets secure the outright MIAA regular-season title for the first time since 1972. In Olivet’s 89–73 win over Adrian, he recorded a double-double with a game-high 23 points and 18 rebounds, adding two assists and two steals while shooting 9-of-10 (.900) from the field and 5-of-5 at the free-throw line. Kretschman followed with another double-double in an 84–80 victory at Trine, finishing with 12 points, a game-best 13 rebounds, three assists, and a steal. He currently ranks among the league’s top three with 158 defensive rebounds and 225 total rebounds.
MIAA Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week - Sydney Vis, Hope College
Senior guard/forward Sydney Vis helped lead the Flying Dutch to back-to-back wins, including an 80–44 victory over Albion and an 89–58 win against Trine. Across the two games, Vis totaled 35 points, three steals, an assist, four rebounds, and seven three-pointers in just 34 minutes of action.
MIAA Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week - 4x400m Relay, Hope
Hope’s 4x400-meter relay competed at the University of Michigan’s Silverston Invitational on Friday, winning the event with a time of 3:14.31. The mark currently ranks eighth nationally and first in the league. The victorious quartet featured sophomore Kevin Barifagok, senior Erickson Kunzler, junior Dylan Terpstra, and freshman Luke Bellino.
MIAA Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week - Ian Kramp, Adrian College
Sophomore Ian Kramp competed in the heptathlon at the 2026 MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships last week, breaking Adrian's program record with a score of 4,179 to place third at the conference meet. The previous record of 4,024 had stood since 2018.
MIAA Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week - Sara Schermerhorn, Hope College
Senior Sara Schermerhorn competed at the University of Michigan’s Silverston Invitational last week, running a lifetime-best 24.39 in the 200-meter dash. Her time currently ranks second in the conference and sixth nationally.
MIAA Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week - Alysia Townsend, Adrian College
Sophomore Alysia Townsend delivered a record-breaking week, beginning with the pentathlon at the 2026 MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, where she set a new Adrian program record with 2,939 points to place fourth. The previous record of 2,704 had stood since 2017. Later in the week at the Hillsdale Tune-Up, Townsend broke the school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.23, surpassing the 2019 mark of 26.35, and also posted a personal-best 8.01 in the 60-meter dash.
MIAA Men's Swimming Athlete of the Week - Charles Platt, Calvin University
Senior Charles Platt was named Most Valuable Swimmer after a stellar showing at the 2026 MIAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships Presented by Collegiate Credit Union. He opened the meet by anchoring the record-setting 800 freestyle relay (6:32.25). On day two, Platt captured the 50 freestyle title in 19.97 and later led off the winning 400 medley relay (3:15.62). He continued his record-breaking run with a 1:36.27 in the 200 freestyle, surpassing the previous meet record set in 2021, and set another record in the 100 freestyle with a 43.15 on the final day. Platt closed the championships by anchoring the victorious 400 freestyle relay (2:58.50).
MIAA Men's Diving Athlete of the Week - Troy Richard, Kalamazoo College
Freshman Troy Richard was voted MIAA Most Valuable Diver following outstanding performances at the 2026 MIAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships. He earned his first collegiate conference title with a first-place finish on the one-meter board, scoring 486.70, and followed with a runner-up finish to his teammate on the three-meter board with a score of 497.45.
MIAA Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week - Greta Gidley, Hope College
Fifth-year senior Greta Gidley was named MIAA Most Valuable Swimmer after leading the Flying Dutch to the 2026 MIAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship title. She opened the meet by leading off the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:31.89) and later set an MIAA meet record in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.47, breaking her own record from 2024. Gidley closed Thursday by swimming the second leg of the victorious 400 medley relay (3:44.74). On Friday, she again contributed to a relay win on the second leg of the 200 medley relay (1:41.46) before adding two individual titles, capturing the 100 butterfly in 55.45 and setting an MIAA record in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:01.89, breaking a record that had stood since 2009.
MIAA Women's Diving Athlete of the Week - Grace Dawson, Hope College
Freshman Grace Dawson was named MIAA Most Valuable Diver after helping Hope capture the 2026 MIAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship title. She placed runner-up on the three-meter board by just 0.40 points with a score of 451.50, then claimed the one-meter title with a winning score of 441.25.
MIAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week - Edward Bieniasz, Adrian College
Senior pitcher Edward Bieniasz led the Bulldogs to a 10–2 victory at Mount Union on Saturday. He tossed 7.0 innings, allowing just two hits and one earned run without issuing a walk, while striking out eight batters.
MIAA Baseball Position Player of the Week - Jake Burns, Adrian College
Sophomore Jake Burns helped Adrian secure back-to-back wins with a 15–9 victory at SUNY Brockport and a 10–2 win at Mount Union. In 11 at-bats across the two games, Burns recorded four hits, two home runs, two RBIs, four runs scored, and a walk while batting .363. He currently leads the conference with a 1.091 slugging percentage.
MIAA Men's Lacrosse Offensive Athlete of the Week - Cal Stearns, Albion College
Senior midfielder Cal Stearns led the Brits to a 15–5 victory over Otterbein on Saturday, powering the offense with six goals and two assists while adding three ground balls. He scored his six goals on nine shots on cage and finished with more goals than the opposing team. Stearns currently leads the conference with 4.00 goals per game and 14.33 shots per game.
MIAA Men's Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week - Zade Gawrys, Trine University
Senior goalkeeper Zade Gawrys posted a 2–0 record for the week, leading the Thunder to a 12–2 win over Carroll and a 16–2 victory against Heidelberg. He recorded nine saves while allowing just two goals for an .818 save percentage against Carroll, then played the first half against Heidelberg, making two saves without conceding a goal to secure a shutout. Gawrys currently leads the conference with a 1.33 goals-against average and an .846 save percentage.
MIAA Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week - Nick Fariello, Trine University
Sophomore Nick Fariello delivered a dominant weekend at the faceoff X in Trine’s wins over Carroll (12–2) and Heidelberg (16–2). He went 6-of-7 (.857) with six ground balls against Carroll and followed with a 9-of-11 (.818) performance and six more ground balls versus Heidelberg. Fariello currently ranks second in the league with a .697 faceoff percentage.
MIAA Women's Lacrosse Offensive Athlete of the Week - Ella Spooner, Kalamazoo College
Senior attacker Ella Spooner helped lead the Hornets to a 1–1 week, highlighted by a 23–0 shutout over Elmhurst. Across the two games, Spooner totaled 11 goals, two assists, and 13 points, while adding nine ground balls, four caused turnovers, and three draw controls. She currently leads the conference with 5.50 goals per game and ranks third in the MIAA with 4.50 ground balls per game.
MIAA Women's Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week - Kennedy Hynde, Kalamazoo College
Junior midfielder Kennedy Hynde helped Kalamazoo to a 1–1 week, highlighted by a 23–0 shutout over Elmhurst. She totaled four caused turnovers, nine ground balls, nine draw controls, and a goal across the two contests.
MIAA Women's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week - Madeline Turcotte, Adrian College
Junior midfielder Madeline Turcotte led Adrian to a 20–3 victory over MSOE on Saturday. She collected eight draw controls to help the Bulldogs secure a 16–7 advantage in the circle, while also scoring five goals, adding three assists, and recording two caused turnovers. Turcotte currently leads the league with 2.50 assists per game and 9.00 draw controls per game.
MIAA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week - Alex Fleming, Kalamazoo College
Junior Alex Fleming went 2–0 at No. 2 singles and 1–1 at No. 1 doubles to help lead the Hornets to a 2–0 week, highlighted by a 7–0 sweep of Anderson and a 5–2 win over North Central. He earned a 6–3, 6–2 singles victory over Anderson’s Ezekial Bergen. Fleming teamed up with Cameron Crosby for a 6–4 doubles win against North Central’s Philipp Wottgen and Rafael Lessa. He capped the weekend with a three-set singles victory, rallying for a 4–6, 6–4, 6–2 win.
MIAA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week - Juliana Pullen, Kalamazoo College
Junior Juliana Pullen posted a perfect 4–0 record over the weekend, earning two No. 1 singles and two No. 1 doubles victories. She opened with a 6–2 doubles win alongside partner Addison Lyons against Ohio Northern’s Abby Cruser and Jamie Hurst, then secured a 7–5, 2–3 (ret.) singles victory over Jenna Bell. Pullen and Lyons followed with a 6–1 doubles win against Oberlin’s Rachel Allen and Freya Rahm. She capped the weekend with a dominant 6–2, 6–1 singles triumph over Stella Kollmansberger.
