FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) has announced its Athletes of the Week for the period covering December 29 - January 4. Each week throughout the academic year, the conference recognizes standout performances from student-athletes across its member institutions.
The MIAA Athlete of the Week honors are selected from nominations submitted by head coaches at each school. These awards spotlight the top individual efforts in competition and showcase the high level of play within the conference.
Selections are released every Monday at 4:00 p.m., with the exception of weeks impacted by federal holidays.
MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week - Kam Mayes, Albion College
Senior forward Kam Mayes played a key role in leading the Brits to a 2-0 week with wins over Westminster (83–63) and Allegheny (66–60). He was named to the Smokey Ballenger All-Tournament Team after averaging 20 points, 7.5 rebounds, and four assists, including a career-high five assists against Allegheny. Mayes was instrumental in holding Westminster—who entered the game averaging 77 points per contest—to just 61 points. He finished the weekend with a plus-minus of +24. Mayes is currently top five in the conference with 347 minutes played, 44 free throws, 164 points, 14.9 points per contest, 64 defensive rebounds, 85 total boards, and 7.7 rebounds per game.
MIAA Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week - Erin Sherwood, Trine University
Senior guard/forward Erin Sherwood was named the Most Valuable Player of the DePauw Tournament after leading the Thunder to a 60-51 win at DePauw, followed by an 81-62 victory over Elmhurst. Trine also secured a 71-48 win versus Saint Mary's on Saturday. Over the three contests, Sherwood totaled 45 points (15 per game), 10 steals, nine rebounds, and four assists. She went 19-of-40 (.475) from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 in free throws. Sherwood is currently top five in the MIAA with 14.1 points per game, 64 field goals, and a field-goal percentage of .492.
