FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) has announced its Athletes of the Week for the period covering January 5-11. Each week throughout the academic year, the conference recognizes standout performances from student-athletes across its member institutions.
The MIAA Athlete of the Week honors are selected from nominations submitted by head coaches at each school. These awards spotlight the top individual efforts in competition and showcase the high level of play within the conference.
Selections are released every Monday at 4:00 p.m., with the exception of weeks impacted by federal holidays.
MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week - Parker Hovey, Hope College
Junior forward Parker Hovey had a tremendous week in leading Hope to two crucial MIAA victories against Trine (82-80) and at Olivet (67-65). Hovey had 22 points on 8-of-13 (.615) from the floor along with seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks and four steals in the league opener against the Thunder. He came back with a career-high 33 points (12-of-20 field goals and 2-of-2 triples) versus the Comets and an impactful seven rebounds, six assists, six steals, and a blocked shot. Hovey is currently top three in the conference with 20.5 points per game, 101 field goals, 76 free throws, 287 points, a .571 field-goal percentage, 22 blocks, 37 steals, and 445 minutes played.
MIAA Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week - Madison Wagner, Trine University
Sophomore guard Madison Wagner helped lead the Thunder to back-to-back league wins, including a 67–61 victory over No. 7 Hope and a 69–47 win at Alma. In 44 total minutes, Wagner recorded 34 points (17.0 per game), four steals, three assists, and seven rebounds. She shot 9-of-18 (.500) from the field, 6-of-10 (.600) from three-point range, and 10-of-13 (.769) at the free-throw line. Wagner currently ranks among the MIAA’s top five with 22 three-pointers.
MIAA Men's Swimming Athlete of the Week - Carter Detweiler, Calvin University
Sophomore Carter Detweiler opened the new year with a strong performance against Division II Wayne State University. He posted a career-best dual-meet time of 1:43.2 to win the 200 freestyle and followed with a third-place finish in the 100 freestyle, clocking 47.3—also the fastest dual-meet time of his career in that event.
MIAA Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week - Elyse Radawski, Calvin University
Senior Emily Radawski made a strong impact in the Knights’ first meet back from the break, a win over Division II Wayne State University. She swam the butterfly leg of the winning 400 medley relay with a 59.5 split, then captured the 100 butterfly in a close race at 1:00.5. Radawski also contributed to a 1-2-3 sweep in the 50 freestyle, finishing in 24.9.
MIAA Men's Diving Athlete of the Week - Jeremy Romero, Albion College
Senior Jeremy Romero dove six dives on both boards in a non-conference dual meet versus Olivet on Senior Day. Romero posted a 255.60 in the one-meter dive and a 207.82 on the three-meter board. Both scores were the top in the league over the weekend.
MIAA Women's Diving Athlete of the Week - Wen Wadsworth-Curcuru, Albion College
Junior Wen Wadsworth-Curcuru had a record-breaking day in the Britons' non-conference dual meet versus Olivet on Saturday. Wadsworth-Curcuru once again broke Albion's pool records in both events, scoring a 267.22 on the one-meter board and a 293.85 in the three-meter dive.
MIAA Wrestling Athlete of the Week - Mason Knight, The University of Olivet
Junior Mason Knight went undefeated at the NWCA National Dual Meet Championships over the weekend. Knight defeated his opponent from Central College by major decision and, in the third round, defeated nationally-ranked (No. 7) 285-pound wrestler Justin Mastson of Dubuque. His victory secured Olivet's dual win over Dubuque, who was seeded ahead of the Comets, and guaranteed them a 22nd-place finish. Knight is currently ranked third at 285 pounds in the NCAA Regional Poll and holds a 17–7 record on the season, with three of his losses from NAIA or Division II wrestlers.
