ANGOLA, Ind. -- Calvin University won the 2026 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship Presented by Collegiate Credit Union with 191 points, earning its fourth meet championship title under the current format and first since 2019. The 2026 championship marked a historic transformation for the conference, as combined events were introduced for the first time and the main meet expanded to a two-day format. The heptathlon was hosted by Alma College on February 16–17, while the remainder of the championships took place February 27–28 at Trine University. The season also marked the inaugural year of varsity track and field for Kalamazoo College.
Calvin junior Zach Van Baren became the first heptathlon champion in MIAA indoor history with 4,878 points. Hope College freshman Lincoln Phillips finished second with 4,378 points, followed by Adrian College sophomore Ian Kramp with 4,179.
Calvin dominated the high jump, sweeping the top three spots as sophomore Simon Vandenbroek won with a clearance of 2.02m. Freshman Eric Barancik finished second (1.99m), and classmate Sam Abdalla placed third (1.96m).
Junior Owen Fremeau of The University of Olivet delivered a record-breaking performance in the weight throw, winning with a toss of 19.20m to shatter his previous MIAA meet record of 18.88m from 2025. Adrian junior Keith Scott finished second (17.31m), and Trine senior Myles Jackson placed third (15.94m).
Calvin junior Connor Johnson captured the long jump title with a mark of 6.93m. Hope freshman Lincoln Phillips added a second-place finish (6.77m), while Olivet freshman Aiden Coggins placed third (6.57m).
Hope set an MIAA meet record in the distance medley relay, as the quartet of senior Carston Cole, senior Erickson Kunzler, junior Carter Dean, and senior Ian Petruska combined for 10:26.51 to break the previous record of 10:28.24 set in 2017. Trine finished second in 10:31.78 with freshman Brady Millington, junior Hunter Eifert, freshman Ethan Schroeder, and senior Drew Sillaway, while Calvin placed third in 10:35.98 with freshmen Jonas Church, Jackson Meyers and Samuel Downing, and junior Pierce Bentley.
Kalamazoo sophomore Jack Schneider made history for the Hornets' new program by winning the 5,000m run in 14:58.93. Trine runners Blake Overmyer (15:03.74) and Nicholas Spielman (15:04.45) finished second and third, respectively.
Calvin freshman Zach Hartemink won the pole vault with a clearance of 4.46m, edging Olivet sophomore Alex Brown on attempts at the same height. Albion College sophomore Will Monnig finished third (4.36m).
Albion senior James Grey claimed the triple jump title with a mark of 14.11m. Calvin junior Luke Nguyen finished second (13.92m), followed by freshman teammate Alex Guidry (13.85m).
Olivet's Fremeau added a second victory in the shot put, setting an MIAA meet record with a throw of 17.99m to surpass his own 2025 record of 16.95m. Albion sophomore Van Norman placed second (15.59m), and Calvin freshman James McCoy finished third (14.90m).
Hope freshman Aiden Moore won the mile in 4:13.94. Calvin sophomore Abe VanDuinen finished second (4:15.95), and Hope sophomore Elias Kretchmar was third (4:16.10).
Hope sophomore Kevin Barifagok captured the 60m hurdles title in 8.36. Calvin's Van Baren placed second (8.42), and Calvin sophomore Rhys Bedford finished third (8.45).
The Flying Dutchmen swept the top three places in the 400m dash, led by junior Dylan Terpstra's winning time of 49.15. Barifagok finished second (49.80), and freshman Luke Bellino placed third (49.95).
Trine senior Braden Estep won the 60m dash in 6.82. Adrian sophomore Jaymes Vines finished second in 6.84 (6.835), just ahead of a Hope freshman Maurice Street who placed third in 6.84 (6.838).
Calvin's VanDuinen returned to the track to win the 800m run in 1:57.53. Kalamazoo sophomore Mason Jett finished second (1:58.39), and Hope's Kunzler placed third (1:59.10).
Trine's Estep completed the sprint double by winning the 200m dash in 21.93. Adrian's Vines finished second (22.01), and Albion senior Cooper Bright placed third (22.04).
Trine junior Max Van Huis captured the 3,000m run title in 8:36.36. Hope's Kretchmar finished second (8:42.24), followed closely by freshman teammate Elijah Forbord (8:42.28).
Calvin sealed the team championship with a victory in the 4x400 relay, as the quartet of sophomore Benjamin Habers, senior Connor Lubberts, sophomore Alexander Nelson, and senior Koby VanderWoude combined for a time of 3:24.82. Albion finished second in 3:26.57 with junior Oghnefejiro Nakireru, senior Cooper Bright, junior Logan Vining, and junior Josiah Graddick, while Trine placed third in 3:28.20 with freshman Rushawn James, freshman Cole Figg, Estep, and junior Kyle Redd.
Final team standings placed Calvin first with 191 points, followed by Hope (165) and Trine (117.5). Albion finished fourth (57), Olivet fifth (47), Adrian sixth (39), Kalamazoo seventh (27), and Alma eighth (18.5).
With the addition of combined events, the expansion to a two-day championship, and standout performances across the conference, the 2026 championship ushered in a new era for MIAA men's indoor track and field.
